About Me
Hi! I'm Jenna, and I'm so glad you're here
Behind the Birch is my scrapbook of all things parenting, northern living, and navigating the craziness of life while still being intentional about spending time in the trees.
I’m a 30-something mom to one human (Sprout), one K9 (Albus), and wife to my best friend (Spencer). I LOVE where we live. We are settlers of European descent living on the traditional territories of Canada’s Indigenous peoples. As parents, we understand the privileges and responsibilities we hold as guests of this land. We’re committed to learning about and respecting local cultures, unlearning the lessons of our colonial upbringings, and raising Sprout to be a kind and considerate human.
The biggest parenting takeaway in my short time on the job is that it truly does take a village. We’re lucky to live close to some great friends and family who have walked with us and helped us in our parenting journey. But, like most 21st-century, post-pandemic moms, much of my village also exists on the internet. Here in the wild west of the world wide web, I’ve found communities, accounts, and blogs of like-minded individuals to spend time and learn from as I navigate motherhood (and my 30s in general).
As a person, I love coffee, popcorn, trees, and spending time curled up by the wood stove with a good book. As a parent, I love getting to know our tiny human and learning how to set her up to encounter the world as a curious, kind, and compassionate being. And as picturesque as all that sounds, our life is a good amount of poop-not-in-a-scoop a lot of the time too.
So, if I sound like the kind of person you’d like in your 21st-century internet village, please get cozy, take a peek around, and stay awhile.
